Breaking Down Barriers!

Congratulations Ms. B & Ms. Christy!!

Our newest Johnston County Education Foundation grant recipients are Mrs. Christy Nait Saidi and Ms. Abby Buckholt!

Breaking Down Barriers was written in order to provide for multiple facets of each child’s education. This includes not only academic needs, but also functional, social, communication, behavioral, daily living, and vocational skills.  One of the most challenging aspects of doing so is the limited curriculum readily available to teachers in regards to daily living and vocational skills. Students must be given consistent opportunities with explicit instruction that takes them from simulation to success.  The idea of building life skills by breaking down barriers encourages students to complete hands-on activities that require them to work in collaborative groups and follow sequential visual and written directives.  These activities not only allow students to learn to cook, a necessary life skill, but also provide opportunities for students to practice more vocational skills.  In order to continue to fund this curriculum and purchase food and other consumable items, the students will be selling food and beverage items weekly to staff members.  Students will be in charge of every part of this operation including reading recipes, combining ingredients, baking or cooking while demonstrating food and kitchen safety techniques, advertising, customer service, and receiving money. Students will be monitored in small groups with a 1:3 staff-student ratio in order for immediate feedback to be provided during the course of all activities.  Many of the kitchen supplies being requested are adaptive in order to meet the diverse needs of our students.  With the addition of these adaptive items, students gain more independence in the kitchen.  We recognize the need to adapt, modify, and provide multiple means of instruction and assessment in order to reach all learners. We believe wholeheartedly that the funding of this grant will provide us the means to do just that for many years to come.
